Navigating through the Roadblocks of Guided Reading - MVHS: Room# 305

The participants will be presented with instruction on using data to drive instructional decisions for implementing Guided Reading in the classroom including: the set-up of Guided Reading, how it works in the classroom, components of the Guided Reading lesson (ACPS Literacy Model), examples of differentiated lessons for K-2nd and 3rd-5th grades. The participants will take away the structures of Guided Reading, how to plan Guided Reading groups and examples of plans to implement within their classroom. We will provide teachers with GRS (Guided Reading Structures) to reduce the barricades, traps or roadblocks teachers experience in the day-to-day routines in the classrooms. At the end of this session, participants will be able to effectively implement Guided Reading with fidelity, in their classroom. They will leave with tools to navigate the roadblocks of Guided Reading.

How Do You Know? Formative Assessments that Drive Instruction - AHS: Room# SM114

How do you assess what students know and are able to do? This workshop will explore the use of exit slips, polls, conferences, surveys, inventories, letters, and other formative assessments that help teachers build rapport and understand where their students are as they plan instruction. Participants will examine sample assessments to create mock instructional plans for language arts students. During the workshop, we will brainstorm and discuss ways to assess students’ background knowledge, strengths, and needs across content areas and grade levels.

This session will be a bare bones, practical explanation of how to set up a school-wide data wall. Participants in this session will be able to view a scaled down version of a data wall currently in use. Grades represented: 4k-5th. Data represented: SLO data, Fountas & Pinnell and SRI. At the end of the session, participants will have the understanding and templates to create a school-wide data wall. Take-a-ways will include how to flag data in order to create visual representations of focus (i.e. grade, teacher and student) and discussions on how a data wall can help refocus and rekindle a school's enthusiasm and urgency.
