Social-emotional development occurs on a parallel path with early literacy development. Early childhood educators know that literacy opportunities that arise naturally in both the home and school environment not only develop listening skills, oral language, and reading and writing skills, but also foster the development of social-emotional growth. That is, as children experience and master more complex forms of language and literacy, they are more likely to build more complex and sophisticated communication skills in order to articulate themselves. Such students are more likely to engage in positive peer and adult interactions and behaviors in school, and in turn, are more likely to remain more engaged in their academics. Studies have shown that students who have mastered such early literacy skills, and continue to fine tune such skills, are significantly more likely to perform higher academically and engage in positive social-emotional and behavioral self-regulation skills. In this presentation, we will further examine how early literacy development and social-emotional development are interrelated. In addition, we will describe specific and effective literacy-based strategies and activities that both early childhood educators and school-based mental health practitioners can both use in the classroom and suggest to families so they can support their young student’s social-emotional and behavioral skills at home.
