Students beginning in kindergarten love to play video games and watch television. Technology is drawing students away from reading and many teenagers struggle with age-appropriate reading material. A 2005 study by the National Center for Education Statistics, showed that 29 percent of eighth-grade students in the United States were reading below grade level. There are several series of books available that focus on the teen reader that reads below grade level. Content matter in these series focuses on topics of interest to teens that they or friends may be involved in at school or home. We will discuss "The Bluford Series" and similar series and the impact they can have on middle and high school students that struggle with reading. At the end of this session, participants will be able to utilize a reading series that will engage the struggling reader to the solid reader in their middle/high school classroom. They will have access to materials that will support comprehension, writing skills, vocabulary enhancement, and additional projects for enrich the lesson.
